In High Cotton (Somebeachsomewhere) put the Fraser Downs harness racing meet to bed in a late-closing victory over two foes in the track’s Fillies and Mares Open Pace on Monday (Dec. 12).
Dave Hudon had the mare sit third through :26.4, :55.3, and 1:24.2 as Miss Itunes (Scott Knight) showed the way. In High Cotton swung out to step around the tiring Century Mach (Kelly Hoerdt) and motored in the final eighth of a mile to catch Miss Itunes for the win in 1:54.2. Century Mach was seven-and-a-half lengths behind in third.
IN HIGH COTTON REPLAY
It was In High Cotton’s second win in a row in the Fillies and Mares Open with a one-week break between outings. She is a nine-time winner in 57 career tries, and she has earned $126,467. Hoerdt trains the mare and co-owns her with Blair and Erna Corbeil, fellow Beaumont residents.
Hoerdt drove four winners on closing night, but it wasn’t enough to catch Brandon Campbell for the drivers’ title. Campbell won the meet with 123 tallies; Hoerdt was second with 105. Jim Marino was the leading trainer with 99 victories. Hoerdt was second again with 89 wins.
Fraser Downs will resume racing on May 2, 2023 for its Winter/Spring meet, followed by a Fall/Winter meet on Sept. 14.
