Jj Scarlett crushed her rivals in career-best time in the two-year-old pacing filly leg of the Nova Scotia Series for Nova Scotia-bred or owned harness racing horses on Friday at Truro Raceway.
Driven by Donald Gillis Jr., the daughter of Tobago Cays beat the field into the first turn, cutting to the inside for an early lead from post six. The Walter Walker trainee paced through :28.3, :58.3, and 1:27.2 fractions while extending her lead at each station. No foe had a hope of catching her in the final quarter, as she sailed away to a seven-and-a-half length romp in 1:57.2.
Stonebeachlily (Todd Trites) was second throughout and battled off Rhojo Moe (Mary Clare Macdonald) and Jj Linda (Walter Cheverie) for place. Rhojo Moe took third.
JJ SCARLETT REPLAY
Jj Scarlett has now won two of four outings in her rookie season, including the PEI Colt Stakes on Jul. 25. Wwggmacinnismackinnon Stable of Inverness owns her.
The victory also completed a stakes sweep for Gillis Jr. and Walker, who captured the other Nova Scotia Stake division with Cougar On A Terr.
Gillis sent the Cougar Hall filly three-wide into the first turn, clashing with inside starters Kinda Like Royalty (Cheverie) and Whosyourfather (Trites) for the front. Kinda Like Royalty broke stride abruptly midway through the bend, and Cougar On A Terr swept by Whosyourfather to take the lead.
Cougar On A Terr then completed the first quarter mile in :29, half in :59.4, and three-quarters in 1:29.3 and was uncatchable as she closed out the victory in 1:59.4. Whosyourfather remained close throughout but was two and three quarter lengths behind at the finish. West River Glo (Macdonald) was another five lengths adrift in third.
COUGAR ON A TERR REPLAY
Walker, a resident of Inverness, co-owns Cougar On A Terr with Angus Mac Innis of Mabou. They paid $12,000 for the filly at the Atlantic Classic sale. She is now on a three-race winning streak after losing her first two starts in the Atlantic Sires Stakes.
The Nova Scotia Series will continue with a stop at Northside Downs on Aug. 25 in which two-year-old trotters will compete.
Truro Raceway returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 15.
