CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – It will likely only last a day but JM Sportsfan (Sportswriter) can declare herself the fastest harness racing horse of Old Home Week 2022 after a speedy performance in the Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 pace Friday evening (Aug. 12) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
In line to Steven Shepherd, the Harold Shepherd trained mare guarded the rail and led at every call through stanzas of 27.4, 56.1, 1:25.1 and 1:53.3 to win by two-lengths in the $2,700 Fillies and Mares Preferred 3 pace. The Lady Sheriff (Driven by Marc Campbell) finished second ahead of Stealing Bases (Jason Hughes). The trainer Shepherd co-owns the Sportswriter mare with John Birt, Maurice McCabe and Wayne MacPherson of Charlottetown.
JM SPORTSFAN REPLAY
Marc Campbell had three winners on the night to find himself in sole control of the Red Shores Charlottetown driving standings for the first time in 2022. The Orwell driver will look to retain that driving lead as he searches for his 13th straight driving title at the capital oval. Campbell won with Poplar Artie (Mach Three, 1:56.3) for trainer Lenny Myers, Raise You Twenty (Classic Card Shark, 1:57.3) from his own stable and with Magical Cowgirl (Brandons Cowboy, 1:55.1) for trainer Stanley Harper.
David Dowling rocketed to a driving triple on the night winning with West Coast Kid (Betterthancheddar) in 1:57.2 for trainer Phil Kelly, Rockin Novel (Mystery Chase) in 1:57.3 in race 8 from the Jennifer Doyle barn and the finale with the Colin Johnson trained Moonwriter (Sportswriter) in 1:55.4.
Live racing continues Saturday evening at 7 P.M. with the first two trials of the Gold Cup and Saucer presented by Atlantic Lottery. For more information go to Redshores.ca.
