Veracruz (Father Patrick), who moved to Ontario from Kentucky at the end of his freshman year, took his first career harness racing win on Wednesday (Jun. 19) at Grand River Raceway.
Scott Young got the gelding to the front beyond the quarter and built out his lead to four lengths coming around the final turn. The gas pedal remained down in the stretch, and he crossed the line eight-and-three-quarter lengths in front in 1:58.4. Mass Action (Jean Bernard Renaud) was second over Hp Agathe (Anthony Haughan).
VERACRUZ REPLAY
Veracruz, a $65,000 Lexington Select purchase, started his career in Kentucky before moving to the barn of Timothy Cherwaiko last November. Cherwaiko, of Cambridge, owns the three-year-old with Gary Green of Puslinch. Veracruz is now one-for-five with $3,770 in earnings.
Racing is set to continue at Grand River Raceway on Friday, Jun. 21.
