The favoured Lyons Sentinel surged in the stretch off a second-over trip to triumph in the $316,000 Roses Are Red Stakes, the first final on the Saturday harness racing card at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The Captaintreacherous mare dropped back to sixth from the pylon posts as leaving horses from the field of 12 swarmed around her. Rocknificent (Scott Zeron) cut a :26.2 opening quarter on the lead. Tim Tetrick right-lined Lyons Sentinel out nearing the half in :55.4, interrupting the outside flow as Jk First Lady (Dexter Dunn) slid out in front of her.
Lyons Sentinel found herself boxed in turning for home with Major Occasion A (Trevor Henry) holding steady three-wide, but that foe retreated while approaching three-quarters in 1:22.4. Lyons Sentinel drifted off cover in mid-stretch and unleashed her remaining pace to pass all remaining opponents for the victory in 1:49.1.
Rocknificent held second making it a quinella for champion stallion Captaintreacherous, a length clear of third-place finisher So Much More (James MacDonald). The win price was $3.40.
