Badlands Hanover mare Mach Four began her harness racing career as a five-year-old in June and broke her maiden two starts later on Saturday (Jul. 2) at Hanover Raceway
The mare gave owner and trainer Brian Shewfelt of Kincardine his first win of the year. She tore away to a four-length lead at the quarter in :29.3 but heeded a pull on the reins from driver Jason Ryan. Mach Four strolled to the half in 1:02 and turned it back up while going to three-quarters in 1:32 to hold off Duchess Of Brant (Terry Fritz).
Mach Four shelved that rival by mid-stretch and held off the closing Graceful Moves (Colin Kelly) for the 2:02.3 victory.
Graceful Moves got up for second but was three-quarters of a length short. Duchess Of Brant finished third. The public bet the winner down to 3/2.
MACH FOUR REPLAY
Shewfelt acquired the mare in May 2020. Just over two years later, he sent her for a debut qualifier. She has made all three career starts at Hanover and finished second on Jun. 25. She is the first winner for Mach Three mare Mach Some Noise.
Racing returns to Hanover Raceway on Saturday, Jul. 9.
