Hp Running Mass sliced through a wall of four horses in the stretch and surged to win the Woodbine Mohawk Park feature on Thursday.
Louis-Philippe Roy floated the gelding out and found the fifth spot on the rail from post nine after the start. He kept the horse glued to the inside through the quarter in :28.2, :57, and 1:25.2 but found himself boxed in as the field of 10 entered the stretch.
Roy found a seam at the eighth pole as Lifeintheslammer (Matthew Bax) backed up, and the Hp Running Mass exploded at the cones to pass the leader and get up for the victory in a lifetime-best 1:54. Magic Wanda (Chris Christoforou) picked up the place cheque after passing Warrawee Welcome (Jonathan Drury), who finished third, in the stretch. The winner paid $10.80.
HP RUNNING MASS REPLAY
The Jean Tourigny-trained Hp Running Mass has won two of three career starts, and his earnings now total $16,000. Claude Hamel of Ayerās Cliff owns the three-year-old son of Muscle Mass with Michel Damphousse of Louiseville.
Mohawk Park also held its first two-year-old contests of the season on Thursday, which both went to New York-sired Lexington Select Sale graduates.
American Ticket upset at $40.40 in the first dash for rookies, a non-winners of one for filly pacers. She briefly held the lead for driver Phil Hudon before Better Double Flip (James MacDonald) swung to the front. The latter set :29.3, :59.3, 1:27.1 splits, but she couldnāt hold off American Ticket, who rallied off a pocket trip for a 1:54.3 debut score. Better Double Flip was second, and Stonebridge Thalia (Travis Cullen) finished third.
AMERICAN TICKET REPLAY
Blake Macintosh trains the daughter of American Ideal for Hutt Racing Stable of Malvern, Blake and Ozzie Stables of St. George, Mortgage Boys Stable of Fayetteville, and Robert Mac Neil of Brossard. The group bought the filly for $37,000 at the Lexington Select Sale in October 2020.
World At War Deo took the long road to the top in the second event, an Open Trot for two-year-olds, but the colt refused to relinquish it when he got there. Jody Jamieson sent him marching from post nine and took command after grinding on the outside through the quarter in :28.4. He sprinted away from his nine rivals through the middle fractions of :59.3 and 1:29 and held a five-length lead entering the stretch. Others made headway late, but that cushion was enough to finish the job in 1:57.1. Grace (MacDonald) stormed home to finish second, and Southwind Domino (Doug McNair) was third.
WORLD AT WAR DEO REPLAY
World At War Deo paid $3.40 to win in his pari-mutuel debut. He is a Dave Menary-trained son of Chapter Seven. Steve Heimbecker of Waterloo, Blue Chip Bloodstock Inc. of Wallkill, Michael Guerriero of Brampton, and Menary Racing Inc. of Rockton purchased the colt together for $70,000 from the Lexington sale.
Jamieson won two other races on the card for a driving triple.
