Maiden-breaker upsets in Atlantic Sires Stakes

SUMMERSIDE, PE – It is not often a three-year-old filly breaks her maiden against the best in the region while being three-fifths off the track record but that is exactly what Woodmere Delta (Rollwithitharry) did Friday evening at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway as part of Governor’s Plate Week harness racing.

The Jeff Holmes trainee sat second in her $17,980 Atlantic Sires Stakes A-division for three-year-old pacing fillies and surged forward in the stretch drive to win in 1:55.2. Woodmere Delta’s first career victory from nine-starts was just three-fifths shy of the sophomore pacing filly track record of 1:54.4 co-held by Rosetown Mary and JJ Scarlett. Gilles Barrieau was at the lines of Woodmere Delta, the younger half-sister of top flight pacer Woodmere Stealdeal, for owners Robert Sumarah of Nova Scotia and Frank Brundle and Brad Sumarah of Ontario. Pacesetter Fern Hill Indigo (Driven by Brodie MacPhee) was second while Galway Girl (Marc Campbell) grabbed third.

The other $17,980 A-division for three-year-old fillies saw Dusty Lane Dixie (Pang Shui) win in 1:57 for trainer-driver Barrieau and owner David Lund of Moncton, N.B. Race favourite Chip Of Evil (Corey MacPherson) was second ahead of Downtown Tonight (Adam Merner).

A trio of $6,000 B-divisions of the Atlantic Sires Stakes were won by First Filly Chip (MacPherson) in 1:58.2 and Miss Dutton (MacPherson) in 1:57.4 giving Kuri White a training stakes double while Western Lily (Myles Heffernan Sr.) stopped the timer in 1:58.2.

The $7,500 Andrew Perry Memorial trot had Irish Ray land on top in 1:59.4 for trainer-driver Campbell and owner Fred MacDonald of Kingston.

Northern Belle provided a mild upset in the Bud Ramsay Memorial in race 7 in 1:57.3 in line to trainer Damian MacLellan.

The Race 13 Medastar Memorial saw Spicey P (Jason Hughes) prevail in 1:56 from the Ashley Gamester barn.

MacPherson had a driving triple on the card as he also won with Tobin’s Future in 1:56.4 for Jason Biggar of Miscouche.

Trainer Phil Sizer celebrated a pair of winners with Paul Langille in the race bike behind Brookdale George (1:57) and Brookdale Johnny (1:57.1) as they hit the wire first in their dashes.

Live racing continues Saturday afternoon at 4 P.M., with a phenomenal 16-dash line up including the $35,000 Governor’s Plate, presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge, at Red Shores Summerside.
