Manitoba native Emmetts Buddy (In The Irons) stepped up to the $36,000 Preferred and went back-to-back with a tough harness racing effort at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday (Nov. 4).
Starting from the pylons, Tyler Borth ordered speed from the gelding and raced second into the turn as Funatthebeach N (Trevor Henry) crossed over onto the lead. Cold Creek Queso (Jody Jamieson) pressed forward to take over after the quarter in :26.3, and Emmetts Buddy made his move to the front coming down the backstretch.
Emmetts Buddy had his nose in front at the half in :55.4 but was soon faced with Livinthebeachlife (Jonathan Drury), who pulled within a length at three-quarters in 1:22.4. Emmetts Buddy built his lead back up to a length at the eighth pole, but Livinthebeachlife began to close again and was joined by Matai Louis N (Tyler Jones) in deep-stretch. The pair gained for the remainder of the race, but Emmetts Buddy dug deep to hold them off and secure the victory in 1:50.2.
Livinthebeachlife was a game second, a quarter-length ahead of Matai Louis N at the finish.
Emmetts Buddy has now won three Preferred-level contests at Woodbine Mohawk Park in four attempts. He moved to Ontario after a successful rookie season in Manitoba, where he was bred, owned, and trained by Arthur Rey. Rey still owns the gelding that is now 18-for-45 lifetime and has earned $233,519. Michael Kwietniowski has trained Emmetts Buddy to 13 wins in Ontario.
The $92,300 Harvest Series two-year-old filly finals will feature on the next card of racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park. The 11-race program will kick off at 7:10 p.m. EDT.
