CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – World class harness racing returns to Prince Edward Island with the opening program of the 2023 Summer Meet on Saturday, May 6 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The legendary capital track has a 6 P.M. opening post time for the 15-dash program.
The United Kingdom bred Matticulous GB (Hasty Hall) is the favourite in the $3,600 Preferred Pace as the Colin Johnson trainee will look to settle the score for owner Debbie Element of Village Green and Matt and David Burke of Stratford. The eight-year-old came to the Eastern Seaboard last Winter and fell short as the favourite in his debut and will seek vengeance in line to Ken Murphy from post 6.
Middleton Terror was the hot horse in the top class at the end of the Winter Meet with three wins from his last four starts for trainer-driver David Dowling from post 3 Saturday. Former Governor’s Plate winner Rose Run Quest has post 5 for the season opener from the Melissa Rennie barn in line to Adam Merner.
Screen Test is not to be ignored from post 4 for trainer-driver Corey MacPherson, while First Glance (To be driven by Marc Campbell) has the rail and Burn Out Hanover (Brady Sweet) leaves from post 2.
The Post Time Picks like Matticulous GB on top.
“Just like his trainer, Matticulous GB comes from the British Isles and knows how to win races. With 32 wins and $358,000 in earnings to his credit, this gelding knows how to win and has a big chance of landing on the wire first for Murphy today.”
Tobins Brownie is the favourite in the $3,000 Top Mare’s pace in race 9 for trainer-driver Dowling and owners Brittany Dowling, Sandra Weeks and Errol Burgoyne from post 6. Her top rivals are Ubettimagoodone (Gilles Barrieau) and Elm Grove Mistress (Jason Hughes).
Opening night features the Isle Pick 5 with a $1,500 guaranteed pool presented in part by the P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association, as well as two Super Hi-5’s and a late Pik 4 with low 15% take-outs.
