Merigo Magic (Tobago Cays) rocketed from the pocket and took a new lifetime mark with his sixth straight harness racing win in the Atlantic Sires Stakes (AtSS) for three-year-old pacing males on Friday (Jun. 28) at Truro Raceway.
He followed Freemans Legacy through :28, :58, and 1:26.3 splits, sliding out as the field rounded into the stretch. Adam Merner showed him daylight, and the gelding soared four lengths clear to a 1:55.1 victory. Dunsan Harry (Marc Campbell) nailed Freemans Legacy (Jaycob Sweet) on the line for second.
MERIGO MAGIC REPLAY
Merigo Magic has won four stakes races in a row, including the first two AtSS A division legs. The gelding has never missed the board in 16 career starts with 11 wins and $77,533 in earnings. Melissa Rennie trains the sophomore for Mike May, Herman McQuaid, and Derrick Cameron of Charlottetown, and Ian Walker of Mermaid.
Tobins Chester (Shanghai Phil) also doubled up in the AtSS as he captured the second A-level division. Driven by Gilles Barrieau, he made front after a three-across speed duel just past the first station in :27.3 and took it all the way from there. The gelding extended his margin to two-and-a-quarter lengths in the stretch and crossed the line in 1:54.3.
Pauls Crown (Campbell) was a clear second-best with Reassurance (Merner) eight lengths back of the winner in third.
TOBINS CHESTER REPLAY
Tobins Chester has won three straight, all stakes events, for trainer Ashley Gamester. The gelding, owned by Don MacRae of Vernon Bridge, is now 10-for-14 lifetime with $70,614 in earnings. He won the Atlantic Breeders Crown at two.
Resuscitate (Stonebridge Terror, Todd Trites, 1:57.2) and Little Leroy (Source Of Pride, Merner, 1:55) won the AtSS B divisions.
Later on the card, Malignity (Malicious), one of the Atlantic stars of last season, took his first victory at four. After a fifth-place finish in his seasonal debut last week, the gelding swept from fifth to first in a third-quarter blitz and dusted the field by 12 lengths in 1:53.2 with trainer/driver Paul Langille behind. The four-year-old, trained by Langille, won his Atlantic Breeders Crown at two and three and has earned $168,911 with 21 wins in 17 outings.
