Though it wasn’t as decisive as her first leg win, Millies Million wired a three-horse field in the second contest of the Silk Lace for three-year-old Manitoba-sired pacing fillies on Saturday at Miami Fair.
The filly’s victory was as easy as grabbing front-end control and pacing fast. Michel Rey sat back as Millies Million led through :31.4, 1:02.3, and 1:32.3 fractions and cruised to a victory and a new lifetime mark of 2:02.1. Send Me A Tweet (Donald Howlett) kept the contest close, finishing two lengths behind in second. Baby Badger (Kevin Hildebrandt) was well back in third.
Richard Rey trains and owns the daughter of Armbro Baylor that has won six races and has earned $16,978 for him in 11 starts to date. She paid $2.60 to win.
Drivelikeustoleit defeated even-money favourite Dawns Night Owl in the second leg of the Golden Boy Stake for three-year-old Manitoba-sired pacing colts and geldings.
Jimmydidonegood (Kirk Rogers) crossed over four of his five opponents at the start after a burst of speed to take the early lead. Drivelikeustoleit leveraged his inside positioning to take the pocket, but Dean Rey wanted control of the pace and sent the gelding to the front before completing the first quarter mile in :31.1. Rey slowed the field to a 1:02.1 half, but Michel Rey and Promise Me A Win ensured he wouldn’t steal another cheap panel and applied first-over pressure on the backstretch.
Drivelikeustoleit was initially unresponsive, and the challenger went by as they passed three-quarters in 1:32.1. The former clawed his way back to the front though as Promise Me A Win tired on the far turn, and Drivelikeustoleit kicked away to a two-length lead in mid-stretch. First-leg winner Dawns Night Owl activated his afterburners from the backfield, but Drivelikeustoleit made it to the finish line in time to win in 2:02.1.
Dawns Night Owl missed by a neck in second while suffering broken equipment. Promise Me A Win held onto third. The win price was $6.50.
Drivelikeustoleit, an In The Irons gelding, is now two-for-four lifetime. His other victory came in the Manitoba Standardbred Futurity Stake on Jul. 24. Lorraine Rey trains for Kayla and Chase Rey of St. Claude and Michelle Mowat and David Brydon of Neepawa.
Ak Up N Attem proved to be the toughest pacing two-year-old in the Kindergarten Stakes, winning by open lengths after racing on the outside for the entire mile.
His rivals denied him a spot on the pylons, so driver Tyler Grundy decided to grind first-over with Ak Up N Attem. The pair picked up a place in every quarter – they were fourth through the :31.1 first quarter, third at the second station in 1:01.3, and second at the three-quarter marker in 1:32.4.
Leader Bitsnbites (Darryl Mason) had no answer when Ak Up N Attem pulled alongside on the far turn. Ak Up N Attem continued grinding to the finish, passing the leader and putting a five-and-a-quarter-length gap between them as he hit the wire triumphant in 2:04.1.
Bitsnbites finished second over Sassy Libby (Marc Fillion), who followed the winner’s cover and took show.
Ak Up N Attem is an Andreoli Hanover gelding. Trainer Jacqueline Grundy co-owns with the driver. The horse has now won two of his five career attempts.
Miami Fair’s next card on Saturday, Aug. 7 will feature the Manitoba Great Western Stake. First post will be at 3:00 p.m. CDT.
