A nail-biting finish became even more dramatic at Fraser Downs on Thursday (Sep. 29) when Memum Knowsnothing (Glenn White), who finished first by a nose in the Mary Murphy first leg second harness racing division, was disqualified via a driverās objection.
Memum Knowsnothing darted for the lead from post six and cut :27.4, :58.2, and 1:27 panels on top. Tin Foil Hat (Custard The Dragon, Kelly Hoerdt) approached on the outside as the field entered the final turn as Angelsonthehorizon (Dave Hudon) licked her lips from the pocket.
As they entered the stretch, Memum Knowns nothing drifted into the passing lane before being steadied by White. Tin Foil Hat continued to grind on the outside, and Angelsonthehorizon kicked into gear with a now-open path at the pylons. The trio battled to the line, and Memum Knowsnothingās nose was in front as the clock stopped in 1:56.2. Angelsonthehorizon went rough-gaited in the final metres, and Tin Foil Hat got home second.
Hudon claimed foul against Memum Knowsnothing and White for interference in the stretch. After about five minutes of deliberation, the judges ruled Memum Knowsnothing blocked the passing lane at the head of the stretch and disqualified the filly to third. Tin Foil Hat therefore inherited the victory.
TIN FOIL HAT REPLAY
Hoerdt trains Tin Foil Hat and co-owns her with Blair Corbeil of Beaumont and Fred Gilbert of Brandon. The filly is seven-for-21 lifetime with $62,192 in earnings.
Shoot The Whiskey (Shadow Play, Brandon Campbell) captured the first Mary Murphy division for three-year-old pacing fillies in brush-and-crush style. She was a length-and-a-quarter the best over Shes Bodacious (David Kelly) in 1:55.3. Forever Furley (Hudon) finished third.
SHOOT THE WHISKEY REPLAY
The winner had been off for more than a month after finishing fifth in the Gord and Illa Rumpel Memorial final on Aug. 13. The filly is nine-for-16 to date and has banked $93,928. She won the Penny Bath Memorial at Fraser in May. Trainer Jim Marino co-owns with J J J Stables of Prince George.
The Marino/J J J Stables connections struck again as Joe Rich (Custard The Dragon, Campbell) snagged the first Robert Murphy Memorial for three-year-old male pacers in 1:55.4. Jimmyachance (Scott Knight) and Itll Be Fine (Richard Lancaster) dead-heated for place.
JOE RICH REPLAY
Joe Rich has won six times and earned $80,508 in his 20 career starts. The colt has two trips to the winnerās circle this season, finding middling success in stakes company.
Lets Tie One On (Vertical Horizon, Knight) won the other Robert Murphy Memorial split, setting the pace en route to a 1:55.1 score. Minnekhada Joe (Campbell) was a length-and-a-quarter behind. Joe Dimagio (Hoerdt) took show.
LETS TIE ONE ON REPLAY
Lets Tie One On, another owned by Hoerdt and Gilbert, won the Alberta Sires Stakes Marksman earlier this year as one of his eight career tallies. The Christopher Lancaster trainee has raked in $123,348 in 20 appearances.
Fraser Downs will race again on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
