One Last bet, under the guidance of a new trainer and driver, took the lead at three-eighths and converted it to a first lifetime harness racing victory on Tuesday at Woodbine Mohawk Park in the second leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series.
Silent Crossing (Doug McNair) blasted off the start and crossed in front of One Last Bet, who accepted the pocket for Sylvain Filion. Heavy favourite Beyond The Sea (Scott Young) broke stride at the start, leaving her four two-year-old pacing filly rivals to contest the victory. Silent Crossing set a :27.4 first quarter mile, after which Filion steered One Last Bet out of the two-hole and pointed the filly to the lead.
One Last Bet, a daughter of Betting Line, took command but was quickly met by Flo (Trevor Henry), who applied pressure as they traveled to the half in :56.4. One Last Bet led to three-quarters in 1:25.1 and sped away from that rival as she turned for home. No one was able to challenge One Last Bet, who secured the victory in 1:54.1.
Flo officially finished second, but the judges issued a pari-mutuel refund on all wagers placed on her due to the filly experiencing broken equipment before the start. Lyons Euphoria (James MacDonald) took third.
ONE LAST BET REPLAY
One Last Bet moved from the Isaac Waxman barn to the stable of Richard Moreau for the start. Brenda Selwyn Waxman of Dundas and Tess Waxman of Ridgeville purchased the filly from the Lexington Select Sale for $20,000. She finished fifth on her debut at Kawartha Downs on Jul. 24.
Filion had a driving triple on the day, making him the cardās winningest reinsman.
Live racing returns to Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday, Aug. 5, where the second legs of the Pure Ivory Trotting Series and the Millard Farms Trotting Series go forward. The 11-race program will begin at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
