Oney Hall (Deweycheatumnhowe) scored his first harness racing victory since September as he captured the $36,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Monday (Jan. 15).

Oney Hall taking the Preferred

The gelding held the pocket spot for James MacDonald through the opening quarter of :28.1 before a brush by Amigo Volo (Tyler Borth) brushed to the lead and relegated him to third. Amigo Volo, the odds-on favourite, reached the halfway point in :57.1 and brought the field into the final turn.

Oney Hall tipped out nearing three-quarters in 1:26.1 and marched towards the front as they entered the stretch. Oney Hall overwhelmed Amigo Volo in mid-stretch and cleared to the lead. Truffles Too (Sylvain Filion) chased him to the line but was a length-and-a-quarter short as Oney Hall sealed the victory handily in 1:55.2.

Locatelli (Chris Christoforou) was third.

ONEY HALL REPLAY

Oney Hall’s win was his first since September, ending a string of 10 losses. He did not miss a cheque, though, during that period and had placed and four of his past five starts. The gelding has now won 34 of 123 career starts and has earned $693,704. Chantal Mitchell trains the eight-year-old and co-owns him with Alan Leavitt of Lexington.

Borth had the best day among drivers with four victories in 11 races.

Woodbine Mohawk Park will continue racing on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7:10 p.m. EST.
