Nathan Sobey’s Outlaw Sharktastic (Smart Shark) took back the Fillies and Mares Preferred harness racing title at Century Downs on Friday (May 17) in her fourth start since her first defeat of the season.
She went all the way on the engine with Sobey in the bike, tailed by pocket-sitter If Only Id Known (Phil Giesbrecht), who was a close second in the class last week. The panels went up in :28.3, :57.1, and 1:26.4 with the first-up Daisy Corvette (Logan Gillis) unable to make an impact.
If Only Id Known showed late pace in the stretch, narrowing the gap by a length, but Outlaw Sharktastic had a length to spare as she came home to win in 1:55.2 over the wet surface rated good.
If Only Id Known was second. Daisy Corvette toughed out the grind and held the show spot with favourite In High Cotton (Kelly Hoerdt) behind her in fourth.
OUTLAW SHARKTASTIC REPLAY
Outlaw Sharktastic is now three-for-seven on the season for Sobey, who trains the mare and co-owns her with Glenda Winkleman of Edmonton and Glenn Pinel of Calgary. She started the meet with back-to-back wins in the Preferred and hit the board twice in her other three starts leading up to Friday’s performance. The six-year old has won 14 of her 93 lifetime starts and upped her bankroll to $147,086 with the most recent victory.
Through seven races, Giesbrecht and Mike Hennessy have three wins each.
Century Downs will continue racing on Saturday, May 18 at 12:45 p.m. MDT. The Alberta Sires Stakes kicks off on the card with eliminations for the Diamond and Marksman events for three-year-old fillies and colts and geldings, respectively.
