Rookies Meet On Saturday Afternoon In Charlottetown
CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – With a streak of harness racing perfection, Chip Of Evil (Arthur Blue Chip) will have rail control in Saturday afternoon (Sept. 9) P.E.I. Colt Stakes action at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
The city track has a 14-dash presentation with a special 12 P.M. post time for the first half of an incredible day of Canadian Harness Racing with two-year-old pacers on the afternoon card and three-year-old pacers featured on a heavy evening program.
The P.E.I. Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacing fillies carries a pair of $14,500 Gold divisions in races 9 and 13.
Chip Of Evil leaves from post 1 in race 13 of the day from the Eddy Doucette Stable with Corey MacPherson back in the seat behind her. Her main opponents are slated as Shesjusmsundrstood (To be driven by Jason Hughes) and Saulsbrook Feisty (David Dowling).
The other Gold filly split is in race 9 as Goodmorning Nova is the morning line choice off the rail with Gilles Barrieau aboard from the Dwane MacEachern barn. Other top choices include A Girl Named Tom (Paul Langille) and Miss Wicked (MacPherson).
The two-year-old fillies have $7,250 Grassroots splits in races 2, 4 and 10.
The P.E.I. Colt Stakes for two-year-old pacing colts will feature Gold divisions carrying $14,600 purses in races 3 and 12.
Race 12 is headlined by the Myles Heffernan Jr., owned and trained Jackies Boy fresh off an open-length romp at Connell Park in Woodstock, N.B., while setting a new track record over that oval. Myles Heffernan Sr., has the driving assignment from post 4. Dunsan Harry is a top choice with post 2 for driver Barrieau and trainer Saul Lanigan while the Jason Hughes trained and driven Tobins Chester has post 3 after having his first taste of defeat two weeks ago at the hooves of Jackies Boy.
The other $14,600 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old pacing colt Gold division in race 3 has Merigo Magic being forced to overcome the outside post 5 in the compact field as the morning line favourite. Adam Merner drives the Melissa Rennie trainee. His main rivals are inked in as Howmac General (Patrick Shepherd) and Tobins Barn Party (Hughes).
The P.E.I. Colt Stakes also has two-year-old pacing colt grassroots divisions in races 1, 5 and 8 for a $7,300 purse in each.
Race 6 is another leg of the Island Ocean Trot Series for aged trot mares, presented by Burkie By The Bay Stables. Jessiejessorjessica (Dowling) is the top choice from post 4 for trainer Jennifer Doyle.
P.E.I. Colt Stakes Doubleheader Continues Saturday Evening
Sophomore pacing power will converge on Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Saturday evening (Sept. 9) featuring Canada’s oldest Standardbred stake, the P.E.I. Colt Stakes.
The capital track has 16-dashes starting at 6 P.M. as part of the special doubleheader Saturday.
The P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts has a pair of $16,200 Gold divisions in races 12 and 15. Race 12 will see exceptional Malicious colt Malignity the top choice from post 2 for trainer-driver Paul Langille. His opposition includes Woodmere Denny (To be driven by Dale Spence) with post 6 and Elm Grove Restwind (David Dowling) with post 7.
The speedy colt Saulsbrook Ian (Betterthancheddar) gets top billing in his $16,200 Gold division in race 15 with MacPherson in the seat for trainer Jamie Smith. Impeccable Shadow (Adam Merner) is a top selection with post 8 while Baconabiscuit (Dowling) has post 6 as the third choice.
The three-year-old pacing colts have $8,100 Grassroots divisions in races 2 and 4.
Gold divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies hit the track in races 9, 11 and 14 with $13,000 at stake in each.
Saulsbrook Mabel returns to action in her P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division in race 9. Gilles Barrieau has the driving assignment for trainer Joe Baxter as they take on Singing Ramona (MacPherson) and Next In Line (Jason Hughes).
Redlandbethanyjean is the 5-2 favourite in her Gold split in race 11 with Brodie MacPhee steering the Tom Weatherbie trainee from post 3. Itsuptoyou (Barrieau) is a top choice with post 2 along with Gosistersoulsister (Ken Murphy) from the rail.
2022 Atlantic Breeder’s Crown Champion Our Girl Annie is the favourite in the final $13,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes three-year-old pacing filly Gold division from post 2. MacPherson drives for trainer Eddy Doucette up against five foes including Saulsbrook Abbey (Hughes) and Royoz Allie (Ken Murphy).
Grassroots divisions of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies will line up in races 3 and 6 for a $6,500 pot in each.
The mega-stakes program also has a division of the Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series for a $5,230 pot in race 13.
The race 16 finale is the $7,500 Reliable Motors – Richard Campbell Memorial Invitational pace. Twin B Tuffenuff is the top selection for driver Barrieau and trainer Ron Matheson while saddled with post 7 in the free-for-all field.
