P L Oliver (Sportswriter) won the Horses and Geldings Preferred Pace at The Raceway at the Western Fair on Monday (Jan. 29) for his first win of 2024.
Colin Kelly hustled him to the engine, getting around Delightful Leader (Daryl Thiessen) at the quarter in :28.4. P L Oliver took a soft second panel, reaching the half in :59.2, but he came to blows with the first-over Heza Handy Man (Mike Horner) going into the third turn.
They sparred to three-quarters in 1:28.1 and around the final bend. Heza Handy Man dropped back by a length but clawed back down the stretch. He came to within a neck, but P L Oliver held him off to complete the victory in 1:58.
Heza Handy Man was a tough second. Ideal Perception (Anthony Haughan) also closed and got up for third in a late dash.
