SUMMERSIDE, PE – The 2022 stakes season gets underway Sunday (May 29) afternoon on Prince Edward Island with Canada’s oldest Standardbred stake, the P.E.I. Colt Stakes, at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Stash It Away (Pang Shui) will look to continue his champion career in race 12 of the afternoon with first race post time at 1 P.M. for the 13-dash event. Corey MacPherson will drive the gelding for trainer Kevin MacLean and owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford leaving from post 4 in the $11,200 three-year-old colt Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes. His top rivals are rail sitter St Charlesfireball (by Tobago Cays, driven by Marc Campbell) and Middleton Terror (Stonebridge Terror, David Dowling) from post 3.

The other $11,200 Gold division for sophomore colts is in race 10 as Fern Hill General (Malicioius) is the top choice from post 5 from the Earl Smith barn for owners Peter Smith of Stratford and Gerald Morrissey of Charlottetown. Brodie MacPhee will be above the wheels of the gelding. Fern Hill Gusto (Stonebridge Terror, Campbell) is a top contender with post 4 along with Alldawaytocardigan (Tobago Cays, Myles Heffernan Sr.) who was victorious in the Bremner Memorial stake his last start at Exhibition Park Raceway in New Brunswick.
The colts also have $5,600 Grassroots divisions in races 1, 3, 6 and 8.
In three-year-old pacing filly P.E.I. Colt Stakes action, JJ Scarlett (Tobago Cays) will be the one to knock off in her $12,200 Gold division in race 11 fresh off a 1:56.4 qualifier. Danny Gillis drives the filly for trainer Walter Walker and owner Wwggmacinnismackinnon Stable of Inverness, N.S. Her chief rivals are slated to be Therealprincess (Source Of Pride, MacPherson) with post 1 and Saltwater Storm (Stonebridge Terror, Mark Bradley) from post 3.
Ultimate Longshot (Malicioius) went all the way in Bremner Memorial action last week but must overcome post 5 on her way to victory on Sunday for driver David Dowling, trainer Earl Watts and owners Windemere Farms of Springvale and New Brunswick owners Clive Balderston and River Valley Management. Woodmere Jazz (Rollwithitharry) was third that day but will look for redemption from post 4 with Gilles Barrieau picking up the drive. Cutter Loose (Stonebridge Terror, Campbell) is another chief rival from post 2.
A trio of $6,100 Grassroots divisions for sophomore fillies will go behind the gate in races 2, 4 and 9.

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – The Saturday evening harness racing finale promises to be far from easy to handicap as My Land (Badlands Hanover) attempts to take on all comers at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The capital oval has 10-dashes scheduled for a 6:30 P.M. opening post time on Saturday with My Land the morning line choice in the final dash of the night. Jason Hughes drives the Jennifer Doyle co-owned and trained gelding for co-owner Danny Birt of Earnscliffe. The 10-time winner was third his last start in this $2,700 class but will attempt to go all the way on Saturday. Cowboy Logic (Western Ideal) will loom the danger from post 5 for the father-son team of trainer Harold Shepherd and driver Steven Shepherd. Cowboy Logic was large his last outing with a two-length victory in 1:56.1.
COWBOY LOGIC REPLAY
Blue Monk (Up The Credit) has been acquitting himself well on the East Coast and was second at this level his last start for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Jay Noye. He starts from post 7 on Saturday. Legendary Ron (A Rocknroll Dance) is fresh off a 13-length romp at Exhibition Park Raceway in Saint John, N.B., and gets post 3 with Dale Spence above the wheels.
The newcomer in the field is post 4 starter Windsong Quincy (To be driven by Gilles Barrieau) as the five-year-old son of Sportswriter moves into the Thane Arsenault stable after last racing at Rideau Carleton Raceway outside Ottawa for trainer Philip Reid. The eight-time winner took his lifetime best of 1:54 over Rideau in 2021.
Also in the field are Smart Official (by Art Official, driven by David Dowling) and JK Express (Western Paradise, Adam Merner).
Peter MacPhee likes Cowboy Logic on top of the Post Time Picks.
“What a move that was last week made by Cowboy Logic, clearing to the lead up the backstretch and cruising to victory in 1:56.1,” MacPhee said. “Now he’s climbing the class ladder but with Steven on board they get the gold again.”
The evening feature lines up in race 9 for a $3,300 purse. Time To Dance (Campbell) is the top choice from post 5 over post 3 starter GA Speed Sammy (Mark Bradley) and Burn Out Hanover (Brady Sweet) who retains the rail for the fourth straight week.
