Pink Floyd Hanover (A Rocknroll Dance) slingshotted four-wide on the final turn for a 15-1 victory as a snowstorm battered a sloppy Flamboro Downs harness racing surface on Thursday (Jan. 12).
The gelding sat fourth through the first half, saving ground as Gringo Star (Colin Kelly) put up :29 and 1:00.3 panels. Michael Whelan directed Pink Floyd Hanover to the outside entering the third bend and pulled the right line again to go around foes stacked three-high as they approached three-quarters in 1:29.2.
All three outside challengers advanced on Gringo Star as they swung for home. With Cyclone Joe (Scott Coulter) sticking with him on his inside down the lane, Pink Floyd Hanover produced the best late spurt to head Gringo Star at the wire and take the win in 2:00.1.
Gringo Star was defeated by a neck. Cyclone Joe was a half-length short.
PINK FLOYD HANOVER REPLAY
Pink Floyd Hanover placed on his yearly debut on Jan. 5. The four-year-old has won four of his 24 career starts and has earned $42,843. Walter Whelan trains him for Christopher Nicol of Dundas.
It was the Whelans second team win on the card. They also scored in race three with Shadows Shadow (Shadow Play), who broke his maiden off a pocket trip in 2:00.4. Nicol also owns the three-year-old colt who was winless in four in his rookie season.
Flamboro Downs will host its next card on Saturday, Jan. 14.
