Harness racing made its triumphant return to Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the brand new track, the Loop and the fans in attendance were treated to an exciting nine-race card.
Baylor Bobby (Ambro Baylor) will go down in history as the winner of the very first race at the new half-mile oval. He paced the mile in 2:05.0 and broke his maiden in the process. This was the first start for the Aidan Taggart-trained gelding. Blake Piwniuk was in the bike for the win and ended the day with five. Piwniuk has 18 wins in 29 starts this year and continues to roll with his UDRS at 0.714.
Piwniuk also found the winner’s circle in the third race with the five-year-old gelding Tuff As Buff (Sunshine Beach). It was four wins in a row for the Manitoba-bred pacer. It’s the eighth career win for Tuff As Buff, who is in the care of trainer Trevor Williams.
The fastest mile time came when I Will Do It (Camluck) won the Fillies and Mares Open, featuring the dangerous seven-year-old horse, Tagoras. Piwniuk steered the eight-year-old mare to a 1:59.3 time which currently stands as the track record.
Handcuffed (Captive Audience) in the sixth race, and Litizor (Vertical Horizon) were the other winning horses driven by Piwniuk.
Supa Fast (In The Irons) broke his maiden with Dean Rey in the bike. The three-year-old gelding paced a brisk 2:08.1 mile and went wire-to-wire.
Braxton’s Boy (Whosurboy) rallied late in the fourth race to win his second career race. Michel Rey was in the bike and steered the young colt to a 2:04.4 mile.
The three-year-old filly, Nonversation (Mystician) earned her second career win as well with Richard Remillard at the wheel.
Senga Savannah (Riverboat King) also found his way back to the winner’s circle with a 2:03.3-mile time.
