Positive outlook for Ryan after accident

Harness racing driver Jason Ryan will be out of action this week after bearing the brunt of an accident that occurred on Monday, Jan. 13 at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

Ryan, a career winner of 1,940 races, was one of four drivers unseated in the fourth race accident after the leading horse slipped and fell during the opening quarter-mile and caused a chain reaction.

“I’m banged up and bruised my ribs; got lucky enough though nothing is broken,” Ryan told Trot Insider on Wednesday.

After spending Monday night in the hospital for assessment, the 36-year-old resident of Guelph, Ont. is home resting and hoping to be back in the bike sooner than later.

“I took off for the rest of the week and I’ll go from there and see how a feel,” said Ryan, who is coming off a career year in 2024 and his third straight million-dollar season when horses he drove won 244 races and nearly $1.85 million in purses.

The other drivers that were unseated during the accident — Austin Sorrie, Paul MacKenzie and Daryl Thiessen — all returned to action on Tuesday at Western Fair.
