CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Gaining early command of the mile, Winter Blast captured the feature event on the final card of the winter racing season at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Winter Blast had Jason Hughes at the reins from the Jennifer Doyle Stable for owner Danny Birt of Vernon Bridge, and the eight-year-old son of Sand Shooter left sharply to lead in splits of 28.2, 59.1 and 1:29.2. He fought forward for a head decision in 1:58.4 in the $2,950 event over Rockin Indy (Driven by Adam Merner) and Creepin (David Dowling).
The front end was also the place to be in the $1,450 Red Shores Charlottetown Pace as White Mountain Lee was sent to the lead by trainer-driver Brett Leblanc and supplied a colossal upset at 27-1 odds in 2:01.3. Morning line favourite Dapple Apple (Hughes) finished second.
Trainer Greg MacInnis will return to his Tyne Valley base with a pair of winner's from his stable. Ken Murphy steered JK Cowboy to a 2:01 victory in race 8 while Melanies Magic was a 2:01.1 victor in line to MacPherson in race 6.
Harbourlite Jerry visited the winner's circle in the final dash of the season with an off-the-pace effort in 1:59.1 for driver Steven Shepherd, trainer Harold Shepherd and owner Ralph Jardine of Arthur, Ont.
