CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Sugar Bowl (Sweet Lou) is back in action at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park for the Thursday evening (Aug. 1) harness racing feature.
The capital oval will host 14-dashes starting at 6 P.M. with Sugar Bowl the morning line favourite in the race 13 featured pace for Fillies and Mares.
Jason Hughes drives the Ashley Gamester trainee from post 3 for owners Brian MacPhee and Tommy Collings of Mount Stewart in the $3,500 feature. The five-year-old mare has garnered two wins, two seconds and two thirds from seven seasonal starts including a third-place finish in her latest in the $7,500 Ruby Chappell Memorial final at Red Shores Summerside.
Lady Devine will control the pylons at the start for the Red Shores Charlottetown leading duo of driver David Dowling and trainer Jennifer Doyle. Dowling continues to lead all drivers at the historic oval with 52 wins this season.
Adam Merner sits in second place with 35 wins while Marc Campbell will look to close the gap to win his 15th straight Red Shores Charlottetown driving title as he sits third at 33 trips to the winner’s circle. In fourth amongst drivers is Gilles Barrieau (31 wins) followed by Corey MacPherson (27 wins) to round out the top five.
On the training side, Doyle is a 38-time winner this season with a 12-race lead over Jeff Holmes at 26 wins while Ron Matheson is third at 23 victories. Dowling is fourth at 22 wins with Melissa Rennie (17 wins) following in fifth.
Another top entry in the Thursday feature is post 2 starter Saulsbrook Abbey (To be driven by Ken Murphy) who just won a Grassroots division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series in her last start in 1:57.2 for trainer Saul Lanigan.
Also in the field are Pasta Momma (Campbell) from post 4 and Big Diamond (MacPherson) with post 5.
