CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Somewhere Fancy has not seen the Red Shores harness racing starting gate in almost two years but he is back on the East Coast and looking to avenge his 2019 Gold Cup and Saucer defeat in the Saturday evening feature at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Saturday will see a 12-dash presentation getting underway at 6 P.M. featuring the preferred 1 pace in race 11 for a $3,400 pot. Somewhere Fancy will headline that event as the 55-time winner moves from trainer Luis Pena to the Chris MacKay stable of Kensington for owner John Mehlenbacher of Oakville, Ont.
Marc Campbell will pick up the catch drive on the post 4 starter, who last won a race on July 1 at Harrah’s Philadelphia tripping the timer in 1:51.4. Somewhere Fancy’s biggest win on the East Coast came in the 2018 edition of the Gold Cup and Saucer in a 1:50.4 victory.
The pacer returned for the 2019 edition of the race and finished second to Rock Diamonds N.
Rose Run Quest has rail control with Gilles Barrieau in the seat for trainer Jeff Holmes.Ā Screen Test will hold down post 2 for driver Corey MacPherson with the Ron Gass trainee winning his last start in a 1:53.4 romp. Avatar J has post 3 with Kenny Arsenault in the seat while Day Delight has post 5 for driver Brodie MacPhee.
Race analyst Peter MacPhee puts Somewhere Fancy on top of the Post Time Picks. “We all remember what Somewhere Fancy did here in 2018 winning the Gold Cup and Saucer in 150.4 and closed in a snappy 27.3. He’s back on the Island and Campbell hops up so don’t be shocked when they hit the wire first.”
Moonwriter Takes On Summerside Best
SUMMERSIDE, PE – A field of top pacers will assemble for the Sunday afternoon top event at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Moonwriter is the top entrant in the $3,100 class with all the action getting underway at 1 P.M. for the 12-dash program.
The top class lines up in race 11 with Moonwriter the favourite from the outside post 5 with David Dowling at the lines for trainer Colin Johnson and owner Debbie Element of Village Green. The veteran son of Sportswriter has seen the winner’s circle four times already this season since relocating to Eastern Canada including a 1:55.2 victory.
Rail control belongs to Pictonian Storm with Corey MacPherson aboard the Wade Sorrie trainee. The Cornwall driver has sat behind the son of Western Paradise 13-times in his career and has only missed hitting the board once. Hunger Pangs has post 2 for driver Gilles Barrieau as the 13-time winner looks to go over $50,000 in career earnings.
Legendary Ron has post 3 for driver Jason Hughes with the son of A Rocknroll Dance looking to add to his nine top-three finishes this season. Post 4 belongs to Flash In The Pang fresh off a 1:55 lifetime best performance with Brodie MacPhee in the race bike.
The Backstretch Beat in Sunday’s card recognizes Moonwriter’s strength on the lead and puts him as the most probable winner of the day.
“If Dowling hustles Moonwriter to the lead it could be all over in short order.”
Marc Campbell continues to lead the way in the driver’s race at the Prince County oval with 29 wins but the Orwell driver is absent from action on Sunday afternoon. In second place is a tie between Barrieau and MacPherson with 22 wins each. Hughes sits in fourth with 21 victories at the Western track.
The trainer’s race sees Gass in the lead at 14 wins with Campbell in second with 10 trips to the winner’s circle. Wade Sorrie is third at six wins at Red Shores Summerside in 2021.
