A week after being denied by a nose in the $36,000 Preferred Trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park, Amigo Volo (Father Patrick) struck back by defeating Southwind Oncore by a neck in Mondayās (Feb. 5) renewal of the harness racing class.
Amigo Volo took point heading to the quarter in :26.4 for Tyler Borth but gave up command to the parked-out Oney Hall entering the backstretch. Amigo Volo quickly retook as Handsome Sebastian (Sylvain Filion) pulled out from third, but the latter swept by him at the half in :55.4. Handsome Sebastian brought the field through three-quarters in 1:25.4 under pressure from Locatelli (Chris Christoforou) with Amigo Volo in the pocket and Southwind Oncore trailing.
Handsome Sebastian and Locatelli battled down the stretch, but Amigo Volo found room between them and rushed up in the last eighth of a mile. Southwind Oncore reached top gear and joined the top three from the backfield in deep-stretch. Amigo Volo hit the top late, and he held off the surging Southwind Oncore to score by a neck in 1:53.4.
Southwind Oncore was second, a half-length in front of Handsome Sebastian.
AMIGO VOLO REPLAY
The victory was the first of the year for Amigo Volo, a double-millionaire. He has been a force at the top levels of Mohawk Park since arriving at the track in September. The gelding has hit the board in all but one of 12 starts and won three times. Meg Crone trains him for Pinske Stables of Plato and Dave Miller of Lake Mary. The seven-year-old is now 32-for-87 with $2,394,926 in earnings.
The next card at Woodbine Mohawk Park is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 8 with a 7:10 p.m. first post. The 11-race slate will feature the continuation of the Blizzard Pacing Series.
