Its Huw You Know and driver Mike Healey went down during the third race at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday, Feb. 21.
The condition of both horse and driver is currently unconfirmed after the harness racing accident. Announcer Dave Schriber called during the race that Healey was moving his arms. The reinsman was then off the racetrack before the field came around for the next lap. Its Huw You Know got to his feet after the fall and galloped around the outside of the racetrack. The horse appeared to have fallen into the snowbank on the inside of the track at some point after the incident, and he was later removed and seen standing on the live broadcast.
Seeyou Men was attempting to clear to the front coming around the first turn when he hooked wheels with leader Sir Chopin. The pair drifted out and backed into Its Huw You Know, who then fell. The Preferred event was declared a no contest. No further information is available at this time.
Guy Gagnon won his fourth of five races later in the card as he and Luke And Duke made short work of the Preferred Handicap field.
Gagnon, Rideau's leading driver of 2020, sent the nine-year-old Mach Three gelding marching early from post six. Racemup got away best and hung out Luke And Duke, who made the front midway through the first turn and set a quick 27.3 first panel. Gagnon then produced a perfect second-quarter breather, bringing his mount to the half in 58 and accelerated again to hit the three-quarters in 1:26. Racemup took his shot turning for home, pulling out of the pocket, but the leader had far too much. Luke And Duke put away the challenger with mild urging and coasted to a one-and-a-quarter length victory. Racemup held on for place and Officer Jones converted a three-hole trip into show money. The winner paid $3.20.
Gagnon co-owns with Jean Laroche and trains Luke and Duke, who they claimed on Aug. 23rd, 2020. The horse now has 29 wins and more than $180,000 in earnings lifetime.
Rideau Carleton held 13 races on Feb. 21. The track has no more scheduled race dates.
