If it’s Saturday night, then it has to be Jimmy Freight night as the harness racing stallion posted his third straight win, five in his last six outings, all in the $36,000 Preferred-Handicap Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The ninth race feature started just as it would end, with Jimmy Freight on top. Driver Louis-Philippe Roy left from post six with Jimmy Freight and they took command of the race with stablemate and O’Brien Award winner Wheels On Fire (Doug McNair) sitting the two-hole spot as they sped to the opening quarter mile in :27.3.
With no one willing to challenge Jimmy Freight, he led the field past the half mile marker in :56. That was when the action did begin to heat up a little as Sintra, making his first start back after a long layoff, came first-over for driver Jody Jamieson and started to make his way towards the leader as they went by the three-quarters in 1:24.
But Jimmy Freight and Roy were not done yet. As they started down the stretch, Jimmy Freight found another gear, kicked in a :26.2 last quarter mile and went on to win by two lengths in 1:50.2. Wheels On Fire held for second with Commanding Officer (Sylvain Filion) third.
JIMMY FREIGHT REPLAY
It was the seventh win in just 13 starts this year for Jimmy Freight. The seven-year-old son of Sportswriter time of 1:50.2 was his fastest winning mile so far in 2022. He is trained by Richard Moreau and owned by Adriana Sorella of Guelph, ON, paying $3.90 to win as the 4/5 race favorite.
