Shark Week (Vertical Horizon) proved unaffected by a four-month absence as the king of Western Canada harness racing won his 17th consecutive Preferred at Century Downs on Saturday (Apr. 13).
The gelding went wire-to-wire in his typical fashion. Michael Hennessy rated the fastest horse in the regionās history to :27.3, :56.1, and 1:24.3 panels, and he powered home with ease to win by four-and-three-quarter lengths in 1:52.2. Carro B Bunsen (Logan Gillis) was best of the rest with Icy Blue Scooter (Nathan Sobey) two-and-three-quarter lengths back in third.
SHARK WEEK REPLAY
Shark Week has now won 17 Preferreds in a row in a winning streak that began more than 11 months ago. He became the first horse to break the 1:50 barrier in Western Canada on Jun. 23 when he paced 1:49.2 at Century Downs, and he holds the all-age record at both that track and Century Mile. Rodney Hennessy trains the six-year-old and co-owns him with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton. Shark Week is now 42-for-76 lifetime with earnings of $354,725.
Racing resumes at Century Downs on Friday, Apr. 19.
