Western Canada champion Shark Week (Vertical Horizon) won his ninth straight harness racing Preferred to take his 50th lifetime victory on Saturday (Jan. 4) at Century Mile.
It was business as usual for the gelding, marching to the front and going all the way. He carved out :28.1, :57.1, and 1:26 panels under guidance from Mike Hennessy and motored home to score by two-and-a-quarter lengths in 1:54.4. Matts A Mystician (Nathan Sobey) was best of the rest, edging out General Custard (Dave Kelly) for second.
SHARK WEEK REPLAY
Shark Week has now won 25 of his last 26 races, all at the Preferred level, for trainer Rodney Hennessey. He became the first horse ever to break 1:50 in Western Canada last year and holds the overall track records at Century Downs and Century Mile. The gelding achieved a half-century of wins in 85 career appearances and has earned $426,475. Rodney Hennessy co-owns the seven-year-old with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton.
Mike Hennessy drove four winners on the eight-race card. Trainer Travis Ellis tripled in the final three dashes.
Century Mile will host its next card on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The program will begin at 6:15 p.m. MST and feature a Fillies and Mares Preferred.
