Eight months after her last Preferred win, Shoot The Whiskey (Shadow Play) won the top pacing harness racing class for fillies and mares at The Raceway at the Western Fair District on Tuesday (Jan. 29).
Travis Cullen, winning at a 22.5 per cent clip this season, took the mare to the front in a :27.4 first quarter. Shoot The Whiskey called the shots to the half in :57.4 and three-quarters in 1:26.1 with no opposition. Arizona (Tyler Borth) was the only foe to stick close and maintained the pressure down the stretch, but Shoot The Whiskey came home a one-and-a-half-length victor in 1:54.3. Arizona was a clear second, three lengths clear of show finisher In The Mood (J. Bradley Harris).

Shoot The Whiskey is now two-for-four on the season, her other win coming by eight lengths at London on Jan. 16. Jodie Cullen trains the five-year-old for owners Paul Sanders of Surrey, J J J Stables of Prince George, and Travis Cullen of Dundas. Shoot The Whiskey has won 20 of her 65 career starts and has earned $262,187.
Andy Over (Andovers Son) braved a first-up trip to land a 5-1 upset in the Preferred Handicap Trot. The gelding launched his move going to the half, worked past Power And Grace (Brett MacDonald), and marched to a two-and-three-quarter-length victory in 1:58.2. Delgado (Scott Young) was second, and Dahlquist Hanover (Anthony Haughan) finished third.
ANDY OVER REPLAY
It was the first win of the season for Andy Over in three starts. He is now 29-for-157 lifetime with a bankroll of $228,292. Ashleigh Hensley conditions the seven-year-old and co-owns him with Ed Hensley.
The track recorded a new high handle for a meet with $852,188 pushed through the windows.
