Sizzlen Hot Herbie (Here Comes Herbie) crushed The Raceway at the Western Fair District’s top harness racing trotters on Tuesday (Feb. 14) as the gelding came back to the oval following two starts at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Starting from post six, owner/trainer/driver Natasha Day slid him to the pylons from behind a three-horse wall entering the first turn. Esquire (Tyler Borth) made the front meanwhile and cut a :29 first quarter. Day then put Sizzlen Hot Herbie to work as the field raced past the grandstand, moving him first over before the half in 1:00.
Sizzlen Hot Herbie applied the blowtorch to Esquire through the third panel and pulled clear passing three-quarters in 1:29. The nine-year-old then blew the doors open, streaking four-and-a-quarter lengths away to take the victory in 1:59.1.
Esquire held onto second over the rapidly-closing Jayport Hi Class (Greg Dustin).
SIZZLEN HOT HERBIE REPLAY
The win was Sizzlen Hot Herbie’s second straight in the Western Fair Preferred Handicap – he finished fifth and fourth in his two starts at Mohawk since his last London appearance. The gelding’s record is now 28-for-164 lifetime and has earned $246,100. Day owns, trains, and drives him.
Also on the card, Hot Fudge Sundae (Kadabra) won his first race since the passing of his trainer, Richard Carroll. The gelding made every prior career start under the guidance of Carroll, who passed away on Feb. 3 at 86. Hot Fudge Sundae won 11 of his 66 starts for Carroll and won by three-and-three-quarter lengths on Tuesday for Angie Carroll, Richard’s daughter.
The raceweek continues at The Raceway at the Western Fair District with a 11-race Wednesday card beginning at 5:50 p.m. EST.
