Four harness racing dashes took place at the Loop, and an unusual feat was accomplished. It definitely isn’t the first time it has happened, but it isn’t every day that a horse wins two races during one weekend!
The three-year-old gelding, Sporty Jewel (Sportswriter), found himself in the winner’s circle again on Sunday (Sep. 3) after also winning on Saturday’s (Sep. 2) card in 2:03.4. He seemed to have juice in the tank still as he won wire-to-wire in 2:05.2. He was facing some pressure later and was able to close the race out with a 28.4 final quarter of a mile. This is now three wins in a row for the Trevor Williams-trained gelding. Williams also had a hattrick on the four-race card.
Tagoras (El Toro) ended the card with his return to the winner’s circle. The seven-year-old pacer has yet to win in 2023 but found the steam to put up a 1:59 time to find his way back on top. He notched his 16th career and did it in 72 starts. Tagoras won eight times last year and finished in the top three over 60% of the time. Clayton Braybrook steered the pacer to victory and secured his fourth win of the year.
Live racing will return to the Loop on Sep. 9 at 2:00 p.m. If need, eliminations for the Manitoba Great Western Stakes will take place next week with the final dash set for Sep. 16.
