Offspring of Stay Hungry swept the dashes for rookie harness racing pacers at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Thursday (Jun. 30).
Staythirsty De Vie produced the joint-fastest time among the three groups and kicked home in :26.4 to pass five foes in the final quarter. He sat seventh early for driver James MacDonald, tracked cover third-over to three-quarters, and surged in the final eighth to score by a neck on debut in 1:54.1.
Scribblers (Sportswriter, Bob McClure) was nabbed by a neck after doing much of the work up front. Wall Street Bell (Shadow Play, Doug McNair) finished third.
Robert Jones of Stony Plain spent $25,000 at Harrisburg to purchase the colt. Anthony Beaton trains the son of Western Hanover mare Starofthesea Devie.
STAYTHIRSTY DE VIE REPLAY
That colt doubled the tally for the team of MacDonald and Beaton, who scored earlier with Redwood Hanover. The SSG Stables-owned colt moved first-over out of fourth in the third quarter but became double-covered on the final turn. He drifted to the middle of the track and exploded past three rivals in deep stretch to win in 1:54.1.
He was three-quarters of a length clear of Bettor Bea Terror (Bettors Delight, Sylvain Filion), who took place over Parsons (Shadow Play, Louis-Philippe Roy).
REDWOOD HANOVER REPLAY
The colt was a $50,000 Harrisburg purchase. He is out of Rocknroll Hanover mare Rockingcam Park, a stakes contender in 2013 and 2014.
Racin Hungry (Tyler Moore) completed the Stay Hungry-sired triple in a 29-1 shocker. The debuting filly travelled in fourth before swinging wide on the far turn and grinding down the favoured Always B A Star (Always B Miki, Jody Jamieson) for the score in 1:54.3. The latter finished second, a half-length ahead of Duchene (Betting Line, MacDonald).
RACIN HUNGRY REPLAY
Racin Hungry is out of Four Starzz Meliss (Cambest), one of Mohawk Parkās best pacing mares of the late 2000s. The filly brought in $22,000 at the London Selected sale. Scott McEneny, who trains her, shares ownership with Teresa Davidson of Milton and Floyd Marshall of Jarvis.
Lowry (Father Patrick) blitzed his final quarter in :27.2 but needed a break from the victory-bound Carter Michael Deo (MacDonald) to take the sole dash for trotters. The former swooped three-wide on the final turn from fourth with Carter Michael Deo 12 lengths clear of the group of three. The leader broke stride in the final eighth of a mile, giving Lowry a four-and-a-half-length win in 1:59.1 in his first start.
Wolinak (Wheeling N Dealin, Roy) finished second. Carter Michael Deo was third over the line, but the judges ruled he had galloped for more than 25 consecutive strides and disqualified him to seventh. Winning Muscle (Muscle Mass, Trevor Henry) was consequently moved up to the show placing.
LOWRY REPLAY
The Bax Stable of Campbellville, Brad Grant of Milton, and Steve Heimbecker of Waterloo own the gelding. John Bax trains the $67,000 Lexington Select sale buy, a son of the Credit Winner mare Hustle Heart.
