Harness racing driver Stéphane Gendron has amassed 4237 victories in a long and distinguished career based in Québec, but he’s never had a start to a year like this one.
He is perfect after 5 drives — winning twice with two horses and once with another. And he’s set a track record with each of the two-time winners. He has not appeared as of yet at the Hippodrome 3R or any other track but two Quebec Regional Fairs.
On Sunday, at St Aime des Lacs, it was the turn of the red-hot Jaydens Place to alter a line in the record books, winning the last race, a 2 1/2 mile event, in 5:16, which reduced the old mark set by Hooter Shooter last year by 3 3/5 seconds. The nine-year-old altered son of Vintage Master is trained by Michel Audet for owner Francois Morin. (It should be noted that midway on the 10-race card a track variant of +1 was assigned to the racing surface.)
Gendron’s other two wins, both later in the card, were both in $4,000 Invitationals with horses owned and trained by Michel Allard. The Charlevoix Invitational, named after the region, that is the home of St Aime des Lacs, was won by Mickeymaksomespeed in 1:59.4. The son of Mickey Hanover had combined with Gendron to win in 1:55.2 at St Joseph de Lepage, the fastest mile at any track currently on the Québec Regional Circuit.
The Futures Mamans Quebecoises (Future Moms of Quebec) Invitational was won by Gendron/Allard with Shemakesmefeelunreal, a daughter of Sunshine Beach who set a slow pace then finished in :29.1 to complete the victory in 2:05.
