Sunshine Boy (Sunshine Beach) struck the latest blow at the top of the Fraser Downs harness racing circuit as he defeated Armycaptin Hanover in the Preferred on Friday (Apr. 12).

The gelding worked to the top from post four for Scott Knight, reaching the helm at the quarter in :27.2. He slowed it down to a :56.1 half before Armycaptin Hanover (Allan Molloy), the winner of the previous two top-class dashes, showed himself first-up on the backstretch.

Sunshine Boy hustled to a 1:23.4 three-quarters and kept the pedal down coming around the far turn. Itll Be Fine (Dave Hudon) attempted a rally from the pocket, and Armycaptin Hanover plugged along from three lengths back, but neither could touch Susnhine Boy as he sailed to victory by two-and-a-quarter lengths in 1:52.

Itll Be Fine held off the re-firing Armycaptin Hanover for second.

SUNSHINE BOY REPLAY

Sunshine Boy has won five of his eight starts this season, all at the top level of Fraser Downs. In the other three, all place finishes, Armycaptin Hanover won. Jim Marino trains Sunshine Boy and co-owns the six-year-old with JJJ Stables of Prince George and Paul Sanders of Surrey. The gelding, a perennial Preferred contender since 2022, is 28-for-76 lifetime and has earned $279,628.

Kelly Horedt was the winning driver in four of the night’s 10 races. Knight scooped three of the contests.

Fraser Downs is set to continue racing on Thursday, Apr. 18.
