Harness racing horseman David Kelly used both Century Downs cards on Wednesday to his advantage, scoring a training and driving triple in both.
Kelly’s start to the day was an omen for his success as Chasing Shadows ( $12.10) led at every station for a lifetime-best 1:57.2 victory in the opener. Kelly co-owns with Mike Dicks of Parkland County and Randy Smith of Calgary. The horse is a four-year-old Jk Royal Flush mare.
The Strathmore-based Kelly earned his second win of the afternoon with Whiskey throttle in the fourth race. The Vertical Horizon six-year-old got by rivals late for his fastest of three wins on the season in 1:55.2. Kelly also holds a stake in that gelding; Richard McPhee of Edmonton co-owns.
Hf Thegreatpumpkin topped the field at every pole in the 10th dash to give Kelly his first triple of the day. The five-year-old Pang Shui gelding scored in 1:54.1. Kelly Hoerdt of Beaumont owns with Ed Keryliuk of Edmonton.
Kelly recorded his second hat trick of the night in the second card, a program of six contests to make up for the Calgary-area track’s canceled Sunday races.
Kelly piloted True Horizon to a 1:58.1 score in the second, the six-year-old Vertical Horizon mare’s first win of the year. Kelly is the sole owner of the horse.
The trainer/driver also sent out and guided My Day to break her 2021 maiden in the third. The six-year-old daughter of Test Flight is owned by Kelly and Daniel and Donald McDougall of Calgary.
Kelly completed his second triple with a four and a half length romp behind Gin Twist in a lifetime mark for the horse. He has sole ownership of the five-year-old Vertical Horizon mare.
The first Century card featured an Open Pace. Tiempo Hanover dug in under late pressure to notch his first win at the level since Jun. 15 for trainer and driver Brandon Campbell. It was a season’s best time for the seven-year-old gelded son of Western Ideal. Jodi Loftus and Raymond Henry of Calgary co-own with Dana Shore of St. Albert.
Century Downs will race again on Sunday, Jul. 25.
