Tells On A Roll best again at Mohawk

Tells On A Roll (Tellitlikeitis) proved herself queen of Woodbine Mohawk Park’s competitive Fillies and Mares Preferred harness racing class again on Friday (Aug. 30) in the final race before weather brought the card to an end.

Travis Cullen fired the mare away from post seven, taking the lead in an opening quarter of :26.2. She was allowed a soft second quarter, reaching the half in :56.3, before Canada’s 2023 Horse of the Year Sylvia Hanover (Bob McClure) began a first-up journey.

The challenger lied just off the leader’s wheel as they rounded the final turn and went to three-quarters in 1:24.1, but Tells On A Roll kicked away down the stretch. Sylvia Hanover vaulted past pocket-sitter Huntress (Sylvain Filion) to chase the eventual winner, but Tells On A Roll held her off by a length-and-a-quarter to cap off the 1:50.3 victory.

The heavily favoured Sylvia Hanover was second with Huntress a length back in third.

TELLS ON A ROLL REPLAY

Tells On A Roll reached double-digit wins at the Preferred level on the year with the latest tally, her 19th lifetime. Jodie Cullen trains the four-year-old, a 2023 Indiana Sire Stakes champion, for Paul Sanders of Surrey and A1stable and Ron Cullen of Dundas. The mare has earned $585,126 in 43 career outings.

There were also three Ontario Sires Stakes fourth-leg divisions for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings. The winners were:

• Sauble Wilson (Betterthancheddar, McClure, 1:54), his third straight win for trainer Otis Hall.
• Lyons Honeymonster (Bettors Delight, James MacDonald, 1:54) for trainer Tony Beaton in a maiden-breaking win.
• Blue Bar (All Bets Off, Travis Cullen, 1:52.3) made it four-for-four in the series for trainer Jodie Cullen.

The final two races were cancelled due to a thunderstorm that rolled in late in the night.

The next card at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, Aug. 31 will feature the Canadian Pacing Derby and Maple Leaf Trot, among other stakes events. First post is set for 7:10 p.m. EDT.
