Half of the top harness racing dogs of the City of London Series retained their status on Wednesday (May 17) at The Raceway at the Western Fair District as three of the four second pacing leg divisions saw repeat winners.
Steel Beauty (Bettors Delight, Travis Henry) collared Write The Rules (Scott Young) from the pocket in the first division for fillies and mares and won going away in 1:57.4. Write The Rules was outfinished by two-and-a-quarter lengths but was three-and-three-quarters clear of show finisher Miss Maycee (Colin Kelly).
STEEL BEAUTY REPLAY
Steel Beauty has won seven of 12 starts in her debut season. She is also riding a four-race win streak, which includes her 1:56 victory in the first round. Tim Myers trains the three-year-old filly, who has now earned $33,965, for David Omicioli of Macomb.
Oh Gouda (Betterthancheddar, Michael Horner) held off Yoda Queen (Andy Moore) by a neck in the second filly and mare group for a wire-to-wire victory in 1:58.2. Pink Monster (Scott Coulter) finished tough to finish third by a length in a first-up effort. No Money Honey (Kelly), a first-leg winner, finished sixth.
OH GOUDA REPLAY
The winner is undefeated in her past four and is eight-for-15 lifetime with $37,471 in earnings. She won leg one in 1:58. R A W Equine of Burlington and Mark Horner of St. Maryās own the sophomore filly, who is trained by Michael Horner.
Troubles A Brewin (Betterthancheddar, Anthony Haughan) sailed through a 1:58.2 score in the first division for males, unpressured on the lead. Sky Low Low (J. Bradley Harris) could make no headway in the stretch from the pocket and was second by a length-and-a-half. Hugh Heff (Kelly) finished third. Leg one winner Sporty Bob was set to go in this field but was scratched lame.
TROUBLES A BREWIN REPLAY
It was the third career win for Troubles A Brewin, who also front-stepped to victory in the first leg. She has earned $22,074 in 13 outings for trainer Tony Beaton of Waterdown, who co-owns her with David Mercer of Westmount.
Holy Jalapeno (Betterthancheddar, Tyler Borth), the only non-repeat winner, shrugged off Crazy World (Garrett Rooney) in a back-half battle to take the last division for males in 1:57.4. The latter held onto second in a photo with Beach Tour (Horner).
HOLY JALAPENO REPLAY
Holy Jalapeno finished second in the first leg. The three-year-old has three wins in 16 lifetime appearances. Kenneth Skinner is the sole proprietor of the gelding, who has brought in $32,825.
Boom Town Boy, the other first leg winner, passed on the second leg and is instead in to go on Friday at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The City of London Series will wrap up its preliminary legs with one trotting division for each sex on Friday, May 19 with a first post of 5:50 p.m. EDT. The finals are set for Saturday, May 26.
