Ernesto Delacruz (Vertical Horizon), off since his commanding Western Canada Pacing Derby triumph, started his 2023 season with a harness racing victory in the Preferred-2 at Century Mile on Saturday (Jan. 21).
The gelding sat a gapped-off fifth for the opening half-mile and followed fourth-placed Whiplash Smile (Thomas Miller) to the outside as the field turned for home. He beat pacesetter Outlaw Gunsablazin (Brandon Campbell) by a length. Samba Beat (Phil Giesbrecht) rolled late for show.
