Wheels On Fire proved as good as his 7/5 odds as the harness racing favorite in winning the $34,000 Preferred Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park Saturday night.
As the starting gate pulled away in the second race feature, Untred and driver Jody Jamieson were strung out by Speedy Dominic A (Sylvain Filion) until the opening quarter mile in :27. Then it was Wheels On Fire and driver Doug McNair coming on the outside to take away the lead by the half mile marker in :56.1.
Then it was Beyond Better (James MacDonald) coming first-over with Sweet Deisel (LPR) second-over to the three-quarters in 1:24.2.
As they charged down the stretch, Untred came after Wheels On Fire but could not catch the favorite as he won by three-quarters of a length. Beyond Better finished third.
It was the 11th win on the year for Wheels On Fire ($4.80). The six-year-old gelded son of Somebeachsomewhere is trained by Richard Moreau for owner Brad Grant of Milton, ON.
