The Robert and Jenna Dunn trained Allets (Captain Crunch) had the toughest trip of all the runners in yesterday’s two year old fillies race at Ashburton, but in claiming the victory she proved she had plenty of bottom to her.
Mystic Magic came around three wide at the 800 for driver Jonny Cox. Having sat parked for the first part of the race John Dunn took his cue and moved forward to take the front. At the top of the straight Allets looked to be like a sitting duck, but found a kick and held out a late charge from stablemate Celestial Sea to win by half a length.
ALLETS REPLAY
“John said she was lovely and relaxed sitting parked. Then Coxy came along. John knew that that horse had broken early and he was reluctant to let him go, so he went to the front. I thought overall it was a very good run,” Robert said.
The winning time for the 1700 metres was 2-02.7 with a mile rate of 1-56.1 and the last 800 metres cut out in 56.7.
The win was the filly’s first in three starts. She ran second to Music Mistress on debut in the G3 Caduceus Club of Southland/Alabar Two Year Old Fillies Classic at Ascot Park in March.
“She got sick after that so we had to tip her out and give her a good spell. She had a deep seated lung infection so we had to take our time and get that right.”
The Dunstan Horsefeeds Sires Stake Heat Three, is at Addington on 3rd October while the fourth heat is at the same venue on the 28th. The $200,000 Group One Final is on Show Day.
“She’ll do the Sires Stakes and Sales Series races and the Ace Of Diamonds, so she’s got three big races on the radar.”
The win puts her into the top ten qualifiers for the $100,000 Ace of Diamonds at the end of November.
Diamond Racing now has three two year old fillies inside the qualifying zone of thirteen for the Ace Of Diamonds – Gone Surfin (5th) Queen Tyron (6th) and Allets (9th).
“They’re all different. Allet’s has always had real quick speed. It’s hard to gauge the pecking order at this stage.”
Allets which means beautiful girl, is out of the Dream Away mare Sue Dreamer which won six races – four for Dean Taylor and two for Dave and Claire McGowan including the G3 North Island Breeders Stakes.
As a broodmare she’s left Lovetodream, the winner of eight, Gran Chico which won nine and Sugar Loaf the winner of four of her fifteen starts. Robert trained both Sugar Loaf and Lovetodream.
“They were both very talented horses, but unsound. I think before we got Lovetodream (off Nigel McGrath) she’d already had two operations. Sugar Loaf had a few wee niggly issues so we hope we’re on the mark with his one (Allets).”
Allets is owned by Shirley and Martin Cummings.
“Shirley was Rose’s (ex-wife’s) bridesmaid and we’ve known the family for 50 plus years. Rose went to school with Shirley.”
Shirley’s father Delvan Rickerby bred Allets second dam Adios Tricks (Overtricks) which won nine races for Jack Smolenski including the Great Northern Oaks. Rickerby trained forty three winners including Flaxton (8), Kathy Brigade (7) and Light Lord (7).
“He was a very talented trainer. He always presented his horses in immaculate order. They were always the benchmark in preparation. This filly races in his colours.”
