Perfect manners and brilliant speed combined when Alta Wiseguy (NZ) (Mach Three) led home a quinella of NZB Standardbred harness racing graduates during Kaikoura Trotting Club’s annual Cup Day, held at Addington Raceway on Monday 1 November.
A smart beginning from the Steve and Amanda Telfer-trained gelding from his 10 metre handicap paved the way for a front-running performance for driver Tim Williams, allowing him to take out the $50,000 Listed NZ Yearling Sales Series Aged Classic Pace (2600m).
Alta Wiseguy was purchased for $30,000 by Stonewall Stables from Alta Dream Lodge’s 2019 Auckland National Yearling Sale draft.
Williams had the pacer in front within the first 400 metres of the 2600 metre feature and his rivals never got close to catching him.
Amanda Telfer was thrilled with Alta Wiseguy’s performance and just as pleased with Tim Williams’ front-running drive.
“The horse went super, he had great manners and it was a great drive,” she said.
Alta Wise Guy cleared out to win by three and a quarter lengths at the line from Shan Noble (NZ) (Bettor’s Delight).
The Mark Purdon and Hayden Cullen trained gelding burst home out of the pack to take home a second placing.
Shan Noble was a $76,000 purchase made by All Stars Racing Stables who secured him from Spreydon Lodge’s 2019 Christchurch National Yearling Sale draft.
Both Alta Wiseguy and Shan Noble will progress on to next week’s New Zealand Cup Carnival.
Shan Noble has been nominated for the $35,000 Junior Free For All (1980m) and Alta Wiseguy has been nominated for the another undercard event on New Zealand’s biggest day of harness racing.
