Quality harness racing colt Sand Wave now has a picket fence formline but with it comes the headache of finding suitable races for him before April’s ultimate goal – the Group Three Alabar Southern Supremacy Stakes.

“The plan is to start him in the next Supremacy heat at Riverton with Hurricane Hendrix but it’s tricky with this fella because he’s getting high in the ratings. If he happened to win at Riverton, where do I go between now and the Supremacy (Final)? We might have to race him in some Country Cups racing to keep him going,” said trainer driver Nathan Williamson after the Somebeachsomewhere colt impressively won at Ascot Park.

The three year old got into a nice spot during the running, sitting behind Mr Perfect which sat parked for most of the race.

“It was nice to get an economical run like that being fresh back.”

Sand Wave started to get keen inside the last 400 as leader Tommy Waterhouse clicked up the pace and Williamson peeled the colt off Mr Perfect’s back as the field levelled up for the run home. He let down with a powerful sprint to win by a length and a half to beat Mr Perfect, with half a head back to Tommy Waterhouse.

The closing 800 metres was an impressive 55.9 with the overall time for the 2200 metre mobile 2-41.0.

Meanwhile in the hottest race of the season Lifes A Beach held out late charging Might Be Me to win a heat of the Southern Belle Speed Series, and in doing so broke a track record for the 1700 metres.

The race was set up by Show Me Heaven and Mabalene powering up in an early speed duel with neither Tim Williams (Show Me Heaven) or Brad Williamson (Mabalene) prepared to drop in for a trail.

Life’s A Beach, after having a tough run sitting parked and well off the pace, hit the lead early in the run home and just held on by a nose to beat the late charging Might Be Me.
