B D Joe’s (Roll With Joe-Tact Aunty) win at Addington on Friday night (Oct. 14) reminded me of Trevor Proctor winning his first two races as a harness racing trainer at Ascot Park on 10th January 2008.
B D JOE REPLAY
The two horses were Tact Aunty and Tact Lizzie. Both started as favourites, and both were driven by Brent Barclay.
Tact Aunty, who was on debut, got the ball rolling and won by a nose, whilst later in the programme Tact Lizzie won at her second start.
Tact Aunty (Christian Cullen-Flash Tactics) ended her racing career with three wins from forty one starts and was bought by Brent Smith of Otautau in 2020. She of course is the dam of one the New Zealand Cup favourites B D Joe.
She’s also left Tact Ollie (Badlands Hanover) which won five, and BK Swy (Big Jim) which has won eleven. BK Swy also ran third in the Group Three Ranji Bill Stakes, and third in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes – both at Menangle.
Both B D Joe and BW Swy were bred by Smith. His colts carry the prefix BD – acknowledgement of Brent and his late son Dallas. The fillies are all named BK after his ex-wife Barbara, and daughter Kelly.
Smith worked for thirty five years at the Riccarton Racecourse as Functions Manager before retiring to the deep south.
“I decided to have a wee bit of a break down south and spotted the beautiful hills and the green country and thought ‘why am I living in Christchurch?’ I went home and sold the house so I’m now living in Otautau with just a few acres. I’ve done up the wee cottage there. I potter around with a few horses on the property. I’ve got mares at Nevele R, Wai Eyre and Macca Lodge,” he told me a number of years ago.
Unfortunately, Smith won’t be able to watch B D Joe start in next month’s New Zealand Cup as he’ll be travelling in Asia.
Tact Lizzie (Christian Cullen – Tact Hayley)won ten races during her career. These included the Group One PGG Wrightson New Zealand Breeders Stakes at Addington in 2010. Driven by Stephan McNally she paid $64.30 and $12.00.
She was retained by Proctor and partner Diane Dynes. At stud she’s left Tact Tate (McArdle) the winner of twenty four races, which included the Group One Bohemia Crystal at Menangle and the Group One Nestle 4 Year Old Bonanza at Melton. He’s also won races in America.
Tact Lizzie’s other foals are Tact Rousey (Art Major) which won four of her five starts in Australia, Tact Maggie (Lis Mara) the winner of twelve, Tact Eze (Art Major) one win, and Tact Tory (Rocknroll Hanover) who’s won nine.
So two strands of the famous ‘Tact’ breeding dynasty continue and if B D Joe wins the New Zealand Cup next month it’ll be a well earned reward for a breed that keeps on giving.
