Talented harness racing filly Back Page News showed a touch of class when she beat a small select field of fillies and mares in the Raging Bull at Macca Lodge Ladyship Final at the Wairio meeting today.
In the hands of caretaker trainer Brad Williamson, the two-year-old Sportswriter filly got to the front where she likes to be, and held on to beat Feelthejoy by three quarters of a length running the mile in 1-57.6.
“She’s a lot happier in front. In her second start at Wyndham, she was in a trail and was pulling and hanging so I went round the field and sat parked but she’s a lot better free rolling in front,” Williamson said.
Today was only the filly’s fourth start for Woodend Beach trainer Cam Jones.
“She raced well at her first start at Oamaru and Cameron decided to leave her with me and target a fillies maiden mobile, but we ran down the track against a particularly good field. But she has improved. She beat a really good field of horses today so we’re over the moon,” Williamson said.
Jones, in his first season of training, has crafted a very good record with mainly horses that appear to have reached their limit for other trainers. From just fifty-one starters he’s won fourteen races.
“He’s got a good UDR, and his horses go pretty good so I’m sure he’ll be over the moon with her. She’ll go out for a spell now.”
Back Page News is by Sportswriter out of the Christian Cullen mare Hard Days Night and is out of a breed made famous by Norwegian Wood Breeding Limited who’ve named a lot of their horses after Beatles songs.
