Betterzippit wins the $1 million Nullarbor

Betterzippit (Betterthancheddar) has won the inaugural running of the $1 million Nullarbor tonight (Apr. 14) at Gloucester Park for harness racing trainer Jason Grimson.

It turned out to be a very dramatic race early when the favourite Magnificent Storm was crossed by one of the eastern state raiders out wide in Spirit Of St Louis and driver Jack Callaghan.

With the fireworks on early Cameron Hart driving Betterzippit went back early before making a blistering move with two laps to go, heading off Spirit Of St Louis and taking the lead.

Once in front Betterzippit was never headed in the feature, eventually winning by a narrow margin from Spirit Of St Louis who came again late at the line.

Betterzippit has now won 6 of his seven starts in Australia, since leaving the New Zealand stable of Sean McCaffrey. He paced the 2536m mobile in a slick mile rate of 1:56.8.
