Fernside harness racing driver Kyle Cameron trained and reined back to back winners at Addington yesterday.
Five year old trotter King Of Diamonds, (Majestic Son) despite breaking at the start, proved too good in the LSG Sky Chefs Trot. After the early mistake Cameron settled the gelding back, before making up ground on the inside.
“It’s funny. At the trials he’s a brilliant beginner but in his last few starts he’s done the same thing. He hops out, gallops and I’ve got to get him back. After that he’ll trot the rest of the way. It’s a hard habit to get him out of. It’s more of a mental thing,” Cameron said.

Inside the last 1000 metres Kyle managed to get King Of Diamonds off the running line and on the back of an improving Stella Bay.
“It worked out quite well. (When) Blair took off at the 1000 I was able to go from the fence to three wide. We were in the open down the back but the speed wasn’t right on then, so he saw it out right to the line.”
In a three way battle down the straight King Of Diamonds was too strong, defeating Stellar Bay by a neck with Midnight Diamond a half a head back in third.
“It probably helped to have a horse either side of him to keep him honest.”
KING OF DIAMONDS REPLAY
Yesterday’s win was King Of Diamonds’ first at start number thirty three. Most of his runs have been for his breeder Gerard McCrea.
“I’ve driven him for most of his career. He wasn’t showing any competitive spirit and Gerrard had had enough of him and he said I could have King Of Diamonds but he would keep a share in him.”
Cameron says the five year old has taken a bit of working out.
“Often in his work he would never find the line. We’ve just changed a few things around, changed his training and in the last few months he’s really turned the corner. To begin with I thought one win would pull him up. He probably needs to organise his manners early but the way he’s come on of late I’m more hopeful now that he will be more competitive in that next grade.”
King Of Diamonds is raced by McCrea, Kyle’s wife Michelle, Lindsay and Sharon Marsh and Lindsay’s brother Murray and his partner Maryanne Glasson.
In the following race Cameron’s runner Style Council, (A Rocknroll Dance) after getting back early, came with a good staying run to hang on and beat a late charging Ideal Chevron.
“I bought him at the yearling sales very very cheaply ($3,000). At the time I had a horse for the Eightstixs One Valley Racing Syndicate run by Gary Bell that wasn’t going to be a good prospect, so I said to them to take a half share in Style Council.”
STYLE COUNCIL REPLAY
Yesterday’s win was the five year old’s fourth and second at Addington.
“He won a few races early on the Coast and then was struggling for a bit – going honest races but for fourth, fifth or sixth. Through the summer I worked out that he didn’t take as much work as I’d been giving him. Last prep he won on a premier day at Addington. We gave him a wee spell, brought him back and he’s just carried on from there and been going good races. We were pretty confident today because it was a weaker grade than he’d faced for a while.”
It was a good day for Michelle Cameron as she also has a share in Style Council.
Kyle is currently working fifteen horse and has a bit of time for an unnamed One Over Da Moon trotter out of seven win mare Natives Lasting Love.
“I haven’t named him yet, so I better get onto that. He went to the racecourse for the first time on Thursday and went really nicely.”
