It’s taken the talented harness racing junior driver Carter Dalgety just 550 drives to reach the ton, and he’ll be delighted to know he got there quicker than his good friend and mentor Dexter Dunn who took 624 drives to achieve his milestone.
“I’ve finally got one up on him. You beauty,” Dalgety said.
According to HRNZ records the century of wins for the number of drives is a record for a junior driver.
“Oh geez, I didn’t know that.”
The milestone was achieved tonight in the best possible way, driving All You Need Is Me (Captaintreacherous) trained by his parents Cran and Chrissie Dalgety, in the $110,000 Group One 2023 Pascoe’s The Jewellers Northern Oaks at Alexandra Park.
“It’s a huge thrill and it’s amazing how it’s worked out in that race and being a Group One. I’m stoked to get to 100. It’s been a goal of mine for a long time.”
Watching the win was one very proud mother.
“He goes into his own zone and builds himself up in his own way and I’m very proud of him,” Chrissie said after the win.
Other juniors to reach the 100 mark in relatively quick succession have been Matt Anderson (716), Ben Hope (852), Jonny Cox (871), Mark Jones (875), Nathan Williamson (899) and Sarah O’Reilly (937).
The win was Carter’s second Group One. He drove Krug to win the Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Cup in December 2022.
Carter is also in a tight battle in the Junior Drivers Premiership currently leading with 21 wins from Wilson House 18, Sam Thornley 18 and Kerryn Tomlinson 13.
“It’s going to come down to the wire I reckon. Wilson gets a lot of winners at Palmerston North and Sam gets winners everywhere.”
