Canterbury reinsman Carter Dalgety has no plans to head back to the States at present. But he is heading north to Auckland to supervise three of his parents horses for upcoming harness racing features.
“I will eventually get back there (America) but when I get to drive horses like Republican Party, Captain Commodore and Beside Me, I’ve got to stick around for them. I’m lucky to be on them,” he said.
Republican Party (Bettor’s Delight), Beside Me (Downbytheseaside) and Fugitive (Downbytheseaside) will be under this care this week as they prepare for big assignments in the coming weeks.

“Republican Party and Beside Me are going to race on Friday and Fugitive will run in the first Young Guns heat the following week. It’s good to get them up early,” Carter said.
Republican Party’s main target is The Race by Betcha worth $1,000,000. Beside Me has the $100,000 Group One Pascoes The Jewelers Northern Oaks on her radar, while two year old Fugitive will race in the Young Gun Series.
Fugitive was a $21,000 buy from the Woodlands draft at the 2023 Weanling Sale.
“He’s very sharp. He’s had three trials, two at Ashburton and a quiet one this week at Rangiora. He’s a good natural Downbytheseaside speedy type. The trip will probably make him, but he’s good enough to go there and compete.”
